ODL – Chapter 13 – So You Have Revealed Your True Form

“Nice to meet you. I am Minase Mafuyu, Souma-kun’s imouto1.” (Mafuyu)

“Eh…?” (Shizuka)

For the first time, the three of us took our seats at the unnecessarily large 4-person table in our house. Mafuyu-chan was sitting next to me, and Shizuka was seated across from me.

After Mafuyu-chan’s introduction, Shizuka compared my face and Mafuyu-chan’s alternately, with a question mark hovering over her head.

“Siblings…? But your last name… Is that a touchy subject?2 You two don’t really look alike either.” (Shizuka)

Even though Shizuka looks puzzled, she managed to conjure up a strained smile.

“Well, of course. We’re not siblings.” (Souma)

“Huh?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka’s face twisted into a dumbfounded expression, clearly confused by the situation.

“We are not blood-related. So, our last names are different.” (Mafuyu)

“Hey, Mafuyu-chan, don’t make it complicated.” (Souma)

I tried to put a stop to Mafuyu-chan’s suggestive talk with a serious expression.

…Mafuyu-chan had given me the impression of being a cool beauty back in college, but considering her behavior at the supermarket earlier and now this, she might actually be a bit of an odd one…

“Mafuyu-chan is my childhood friend. We reunited at our university for the first time in ten years. That’s how we started talking to each other again.” (Souma)

“I look up to him just like a real onii-chan.” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan added that as if to provide further context. Her usual cool appearance and serious attitude made her strange statement a bit unsettling, causing Shizuka to be slightly taken back.

“S-So that’s how it is… Then, does that mean that I am the onee-chan3?” (Shizuka)

“Huh…?” (Mafuyu)

A tiny wrinkle formed on Mafuyu-chan’s forehead, like a fresh expanse of snow being disturbed.

“S-Sorry, just kidding! Um, I’m Rinjou Shizuka. I’m twenty years old. Ni-Nice to meet you?” (Shizuka)

“”…”” (Mafuyu & Shizuka)

…What’s with this atmosphere?

I hope both of them are okay. I brought Mafuyu-chan along because she’s composed, but did I maybe make a mistake?

“Alright, I guess it’s time to start frying. Shizuka, did Hiyorin-san say anything?” (Souma)

“Yeah, she just replied saying she’ll be here soon.” (Shizuka)

“Got it.” (Souma)

I took a deep breath and readjusted my apron. It was 7:45 PM. The timing was just right.

“…? What’s wrong?” (Souma)

As I adjust my apron, both Mafuyu-chan and Shizuka start staring at me.

“Nnya, it’s nothing. Good luck with the cooking.” (Shizuka)

“I’m looking forward to it.” (Mafuyu)

“Okay…” (Souma)

I tilt my head and head towards the kitchen.

What was that… Maybe this apron doesn’t suit me after all. Was it a mistake to buy a flower-patterned one because I thought I wouldn’t show it to anyone?

“Souma-kun in an apron… Moe4…” (Shizuka)

“Hey, could you please not get all excited about my onii-chan without permission?” (Mafuyu)

“Come on, you’re not blood-related, right?” (Shizuka)

From the living room, I hear the voices of the two having a seemingly friendly conversation.

I was worried that they won’t get along well but it’s good to see that’s not the case.

“All right, let’s fry these up!” (Souma)

I coat the marinated5 chicken legs in flour and place them into the moderately heated oil.

After that, I lift them out momentarily and fry them again in higher temperature oil; that’s the key to achieving juicy frying.

“Souma-kun, Hiyori-san has arrived. I’ll go open the door.” (Shizuka)

“Got it, thanks.” (Souma)

Amidst the sizzling sounds of frying meat, I respond to Shizuka’s voice that comes through.

Shortly after, the footsteps of two people return.

“…” (Souma)

But then again, a real idol voice actress is in my house.

Feeling Hiyorin’s presence behind me, I tense up.

…No, no, I must concentrate on frying.

“Souma-kun, I hope I’m not bothering you too much.” (Hiyori)

“Ah, it’s fine! Please have a seat wherever you’d like!” (Souma)

Upon hearing Hiyorin’s voice, the chopsticks holding the fried chicken tremble slightly, making me almost drop it. That was close.

“…” (Souma)

I cleared my mind and focussed on lifting the fried chicken onto the wire rack, increasing the oil temperature, and then placing them back in.

From behind me, their voices are a bit distant, but I can hear the laughter of the three seemingly enjoying themselves.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Minase Mafuyu, Souma-kun’s imouto.” (Mafuyu)

Ara6, Souma-kun had an imouto? You’re quite pretty.” (Hiyori)

“Nonono, that’s not true. She seems to be more like a sister-like presence.” (Shizuka)

“Hey, don’t butt in.” (Mafuyu)

“What’s with you? You’re acting quite cheeky for someone younger than me.” (Shizuka)

Fufu, it seems like you two have already become friends.” (Hiyori)

“…” (Souma)

Hmm, I can’t actually hear it that well, but it seems like things are going well.

Both Shizuka and Hiyorin have jobs that put them in front of people (well, Shizuka is a bit debatable), so their skills in getting along with new people are reassuring. It looks like I can trust them to handle Mafuyu-chan just fine.

“All right, they’re done.” (Souma)

I swiftly took out the fried chicken and put them onto a plate.

For now, let’s take half of them, about 15 pieces. I’ll work on the second batch later.

“Everyone, sorry to keep you waiting! The fried chicken is here! Don’t worry if it isn’t enough, there is a second batch later.” (Souma)

I returned to the living room while carrying the plates and looked at Hiyorin.

As she notices my gaze, she smiles back at me.

“Souma-kun, you look quite cute in that apron.” (Hiyori)

“”!?”” (Mafuyu & Shizuka)

“Oh, um, really…? It’s nothing, really…!” (Souma)

Suddenly, my face feels hotter than when I was in front of the oil. To hide my embarrassment, I quickly place the plate on the table.

“They look so delicious!” (Shizuka)

Ara ara, that’s amazing.” (Hiyori)

“…Onii-chan’s… cooking…” (Mafuyu)

The three of them show three distinct reactions to the fried chicken.

In any case, seeing them so excited warms my heart.

“The bowls and chopsticks are in the cabinet. If anyone wants miso soup, feel free to ask. I can make an instant miso soup.” (Souma)

…And so, the first dinner for the four of us begins.

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Yeah sure, friendly conversation. Well, Hiyori doesn’t seem to be the kind of person who makes enemies so I guess it’s just Mafuyu and Shizuka (or am I saying things too soon?).

Don’t ask me why the chapter is titled as it is. I have no idea why either.

There was a lot of talking this chapter, so I might have messed up some of the names for the dialogue.

Footnote:

  1. Imouto is younger sister.
  2. Sibiling usually share the same family name with each other. Since MC and Mafuyu’s last names are different, this suggest a possible divorse between parents or other sensitive family matters.
  3. Onee-chan is older sister
  4. Moe means cute. I think it’s more than that, but that’s my definition of it.
  5. Marinating is the process of soaking foods in a seasoned, often acidic, liquid before cooking.
  6. Ara means “Oh my” or something like that. I’m sure you guys at least heard of Ara ara somewhere before.

ODL – Chapter 12 – Onii-chan ♪

“Is it really okay for you to come along?” (Souma)

“Yeah, I was just about to head home anyways.” (Mafuyu)

“I see. Sorry for making you come along for shopping.” (Souma)

“No, it’s okay. I wanted to talk to Souma-oniichan more.” (Mafuyu)

“…………Eh?” (Souma)

O..Oni-chan!?

Mafuyu-chan, did you just call me ‘Onii-chan’ just now!?

“…………Is that not okay?” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan tilted her head in a cute way and looked up at me, I could only nod in response

“N-No, it’s totally fine.” (Souma)

“Thank you. When it’s just the two of us, let me call you ‘Onii-chan’ okay?” (Mafuyu)

“O-okay.” (Souma)

As the two of us walked through the meat section of the supermarket closest to my home, my mind was still in disarray.

Wait, why are we in the meat section again?

What did we come here to buy?

I seriously have no idea.

“Onii-chan, didn’t we come here to buy chicken? We walked right past it.” (Mafuyu)

“Oh, right, right. Chicken, that’s it. Sorry, I was spacing out.” (Souma)

“Seriously mouu, get it together.” (Mafuyu)

“Sorry…” (Souma)

The reason I can’t focus is you, Mafuyu-chan… It’s all your fault, you know?!

“You said that chicken legs were on sale, right? Is it this one?” (Mafuyu)

“Ah, yeah, it’s this. Thanks, Mafuyu-chan.” (Souma)

As Mafuyu-chan placed the chicken legs she had picked into the basket… I suddenly began to think.

I wonder if girls prefer chicken breasts over chicken legs. …Chicken breast is healthier, after all. Wait, I have no idea how much everyone actually eats.

“How much do you eat, Mafuyu-chan? For example, how about this amount of fried chicken?” (Souma)

I use my fingers to indicate a certain size and show it to Mafuyu-chan.

“Well, um… I guess around 5 pieces? But if onii-chan is making rice, I might be able to eat as much as you make.” (Mafuyu)

“I-I see.” (Souma)

No good… Mafuyu-chan’s suddenly sweet attitude is messing with my brain. My heart is pounding so loudly, it feels like it’s about to give out.

Okay, calm down me.

Assuming Mafuyu-chan eats around five pieces, judging by the amount of food packaging in Shizuka’s home, she probably eats a normal amount. She was even devouring the Peyoung with great enthusiasm. It seems reasonable to think she eats about the same as me.

As for Hiyorin… I wonder. She seems like a drinker, so she might eat quite a bit, right?

If it’s fried chicken, it might sell quite well.

The fried chicken I make is bite-sized, so even girls can eat it in one bite. Maybe around 30 pieces should be fine. If there’s any leftover, we can have it for breakfast tomorrow.

“Mafuyu-chan, is it okay if I get one more pack of chicken legs?” (Souma)

“Okay, got it… This is quite fun, isn’t it?” (Mafuyu)

“………Kinda.” (Souma)

Mafuyu-chan gives a smile I have never seen before from her back in university. Somehow, I managed to return a smile despite my confusion. Is this really that fun? While I was thinking about that, we continued shopping.

“…………Ojamashimasu1.” (Mafuyu)

“Come in. Feel free to make yourself comfortable.” (Souma)

After glancing around the living room, Mafuyu-chan settled herself at the four-seater table placed in the center.

“Why is this table for four people? Onii-chan, you live alone, right?” (Mafuyu)

“Yeah, about that… my parents left it behind. They probably intended to check in on me frequently. But I told them not to worry so much, and after I insisted on it for a long time, they stopped coming.” (Souma)

Fufu. So, how’s your mom doing?” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan’s expression softened as if recalling some old memories.

“She’s doing really well. Almost too well, to the point of being troublesome. She’s overly protective. Even this apartment was chosen by my parents. They said it has good security, even though I actually preferred somewhere closer to the university.” (Souma)

The high rent also meant I don’t get any neighbors. That was the case until recently.

“This apartment is really impressive. I am quite surprised.” (Mafuyu)

“They told me an apartment like this would be enough for a university student to live alone. Thanks to them, I have too much space to handle.” (Souma)

It’s a 2LDK, after all. It could fit a couple and a child. Not that I have any plans for getting a girlfriend or having kids.

“I see… You mentioned having two friends, right?” (Mafuyu)

“Yeah. The neighbor next door and the one across the hall. The apartment diagonally across from mine is empty.” (Souma)

“Hmm…” (Mafuyu)

I place the bite-sized pieces of chicken legs into a bowl and start adding salt, pepper, soy sauce, garlic, sake, sesame oil, and other seasonings. The only difference is that instead of using eggs, I use mayonnaise.

I saw a chef on TV adding mayonnaise to a dish and thought, “This is it!”

It’s a common issue with fried chicken recipes that they often tell you to put “½ an egg”, leaving you wondering what to do with the other half. Switching to mayonnaise solved that problem. It was quite the revolution in my cooking.

After that, you just mix and marinate, coat it with a mixture of potato starch and cornstarch, then fry it.

It’s seriously easy to make. The only drawback of fried chicken is dealing with the oil, but aside from that, there aren’t many downsides, so I make it quite often.

“Hmm… Maybe I should time it so that the second batch finishes frying while we are eating. Girls probably won’t eat too quickly, so their eating pace should be manageable.” (Souma)

As I continued working, I constructed a mental timeline. When I checked the clock, it was exactly 7:00 PM. I still had quite a bit of time left.

“Mafuyu-chan, are you not bored?” (Souma)

Hiyaaa! …Ahem. No, I’m fine.” (Mafuyu)

When I turned back and returned to the living room, Mafuyu-chan, who seemed to have been watching my back, was suddenly startled by my question. She let out a surprised and stiffened up.

While I take off my apron, I sat down next to Mafuyu-chan. I noticed her sneaking a glance at the apron I had placed on the table. Maybe it’s because it’s rare to see a guy wearing an apron.

“I’m sorry for leaving you alone after you came over.” (Souma)

“I should be the one apologizing for not being able to help.” (Mafuyu)

On the way home, I asked Mafuyu-chan about her cooking skills, and it seems that she is not particularly good at cooking either. She wants to cook for herself, but her university life has been so hectic that she hasn’t had much opportunity to do so.

Oh, I totally get it. I started off all enthusiastic for the first few months, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it afterwards. Cooking itself is fine, but the dishes are a hassle, you know? However, once you get used to it, you will find ways to save time, so it’s not that big of a problem anymore.

“Don’t worry about it too much. I’m used to cooking by myself, so just the fact that I can get opinions on what I cook is valuable enough.” (Souma)

By the way, when I asked in the ‘Souma-kai’ group chat if it was alright to bring along one of my kouhais, both of them readily agreed.

When I mentioned it to Shizuka, she sent me a cryptic message in a private chat saying, “You’re quite popular, huh?” But now that I think about it, I haven’t replied to that yet.

“…………? Maybe she’s here, though it’s still early.” (Souma)

As I thought about sending a reply, the doorbell rang at the exact moment I took out my smartphone. On the camera feed, I saw Shizuka’s figure with her slightly wavy chestnut hair, looking a bit fidgety and adjusting her hair ends.

“Looks like the neighbor’s here. I’ll be right back.” (Souma)

“Yeah, got it.” (Mafuyu)

I left the living room and unlocked the front door. Shizuka, with her elegantly brushed down hair, was standing there. I had seen her meticulously grooming herself on the camera feed, but I probably shouldn’t mention that.

As soon as Shizuka saw my face, a teasing smirk formed on hers.

“You’re quite popular, huh?” (Shizuka)

“I’m not making fried chicken for you.” (Souma)

*Bam*

As I closed the door, a loud knocking sound echoed from the other side.

“Hey, open up! I paid you a Yukichi2! Give me some fried chicken already! I’m begging you~~~~!” (Shizuka)

“She’s quite the character.” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan, who had quietly arrived at the entrance at some point, muttered under her breath while looking at the door.

Yeah, I agree.

Illustration of Mafuyu settling down in MC’s home

After glancing around the living room, Mafuyu-chan settled herself at the four-seater table placed in the center.

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Well, the MC went and actually invited her over. Who knows what’s gonna happen from now on. Not to mention, we haven’t see the Hiyorin problem yet.

Also, thanks for the cooking lesson MC, although I probably still won’t touch cooking.

P.S. No chapter tmr, it’s my fated school presentation day.

ODL – Chapter 11 – Looking for Ani with an A-Set Meal

“Hey, did you hear? The Shootdown King of the Engineering Department has finally been shot down!” (Keisuke)

“Hmm? Ah~ that seems to be the case.” (Souma)

As usual, I was waiting at the cafeteria for Keisuke while thinking if I should start without him. As I was wondering this, Keisuke with a tray of curry in his hands, slid into the seat across from me and began speaking enthusiastically.

The Shootdown King of the Engineering Department is the name given to the stunningly beautiful freshman girl who has been shaking up our university for the past two months (apparently). The number of people smitten by her has been reported to have reached double digits (apparently). And looks like her title was based on the fact that she’s a student in the engineering department. Quite the straightforward name.

“Yeah, that’s what they say. Doesn’t it bother you? Even the Tennis Club’s prince got turned down, you know?” (Keisuke)

“Well, not really… It’s not like it concerns us in the first place.” (Souma)

I inserted my chopsticks into the slightly elongated ramen, pretending to not be interested.

“Well, yeah, I get what you’re saying. But come on, wouldn’t you be curious about what kind of guy managed to win over such a beautiful girl?” (Keisuke)

As Keisuke spoke, he opened his mouth wide and energetically gobbled down the curry. Watching him do that, I couldn’t help but think that at the very least, Mafuyu-chan wouldn’t be swayed by a guy who’s gobbling down curry like that.

…Yep.

I recently found out that the Shootdown King of the Engineering Department, aka Minase Mafuyu, is my childhood friend.

It had been about 10 years since I have last seen her. The rumor about the Shootdown King of the Engineering Department being “shot down” is probably because of me. We were talking together during class the other day and were seen by quite a few people which led to the rumor. Just to clarify, we are not in a romantic relationship or anything like that. The Shootdown King of the Engineering Department still doesn’t have a single scratch on her body.

“Well, forget about that. Here, have some bamboo shoots.” (Souma)

“Don’t need ’em. Bamboo shoots and curry don’t really go together.” (Keisuke)

As I said this, I scooped up a piece of bamboo shoot and let it land in the sea of brown. Keisuke, with a dissatisfied expression, put it in his mouth, and then he looked surprised and said, “Hey, this is surprisingly good.” Such peaceful moments were the usual.

“── Souma-kun.” (?)

“Huh?” (Souma)

When I heard someone call my name, I turned to the side. There stood the rumored Shootdown King of the Engineering Department, a freshman who had captured the attention of male students across the campus, the confirmed winner of the upcoming Miss Contest, the Ice Queen herself, none other than Minase Mafuyu, a first-year student in the Engineering Department, holding an A-Set Meal in her hands.

“─ Mafuyu-chan. It’s unusual to see you at the cafeteria. Actually, I feel like I have never seen you here before.” (Souma)

Souma-kun, you mentioned to me that you eat at the cafeteria last time1, so I came to check it out… Am I bothering you?” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan glanced briefly at Keisuke. She was probably concerned about interrupting our conversation. By the way, Keisuke who was in front of the subject of the rumors herself, has become frozen with a spoon halfway to his mouth. Close your mouth; it’s unsightly.

“No, not at all. You don’t need to worry about him at all. Here, take a seat.” (Souma)

“Thank you.” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan pulled out the chair without making a sound and slipped her slender body into the gap.

“Is this your first time at the cafeteria?” (Souma)

“Yeah. I usually eat outside with Arisa.” (Mafuyu)

“Arisa?” (Souma)

“You know, the girl I was in class with the other day.” (Mafuyu)

“Ah, right, that energetic girl.” (Souma)

I recall that she was the girl with pink-beige hair who had energetically dragged Mafuyu-chan right in front of me. So, they are close enough to have lunch together too.

“Is Arisa-chan not coming today?” (Souma)

“Well, she told me to ‘go have lunch with Souma-kun this time.” (Mafuyu)

“Ahaha, I can see that happening.” (Souma)

As I continued chatting with Mafuyu-chan, I sensed an odd atmosphere and looked around. The person glaring at me had eyes that seem to say “What’s going on? Explain yourself”. And it wasn’t just Keisuke.

When I glanced around, it didn’t take long to figure out the source of the strange feeling.

All the guys around us were looking in our direction. Some were doing it blatantly, while others glanced discreetly, but it was clear that everyone was aware of us. There was even a guy looking at us with a gaze that said, “I’ll kill you”. Of course, they must be curious about the Shootdown King of the Engineering Department.

“He-he-hey, Souma-san…? What’s the meaning of this…?” (Keisuke)

Keisuke interjected into the conversation with a strange choice of words and a face that seemed to have a mix of surprise, confusion, and delight.

…If we have been found out, there is no way to avoid addressing it, I suppose. I was planning to keep things with Mafuyu-chan a secret to avoid causing a commotion.

“Minase Mafuyu, a first-year student in the Engineering Department. My childhood friend. Mafuyu-chan, this is Keisuke, a third-year student in the Economics Department. I forgot what exactly he was studying. He’s my friend… or something like that.” (Souma)

Upon hearing my words, Mafuyu-chan turned towards Keisuke and bowed as a greeting.

“Minase Mafuyu desu. Thank you for taking care of Souma-kun.” (Mafuyu)

“No, he hasn’t really done anything for me. If anything, I have been the one taking care of him.” (Souma)

“Is that so?” (Mafuyu)

“Yeah, that’s right. Just earlier, he gave me some bamboo shoots.” (Souma)

“Oh… uh…?” (Keisuke)

Keisuke responded to Mafuyu-chan’s greeting with a subtle, perplexed tone.

“Eh, the Engineering Department’s… Shootdown King…?” (Keisuke)

Saying this, he pointed at Mafuyu-chan with trembling fingers.

“Ah, it seems that that nickname is quite popular. Did you know?” (Souma)

“Sort of… I don’t really like it that much, though.” (Mafuyu)

“Yeah, I get what you mean. It’s weird to be called something without your consent. So, Keisuke, from now on, that nickname is banned.” (Souma)

“Uh, yeah… uh, sure… um, can I call you Minase-san then?” (Keisuke)

“Yes, that’s fine. Nice to meet you.” (Souma)

And so, we had lunch amidst the strangely awkward atmosphere (though it was mostly just Keisuke feeling awkward). Just then, a notification sounded from my smartphone.

“(I might not be home until around 8 PM today. If it’s too late, go ahead and eat without me.)” (Hiyori)

“(I’m fine with anytime. I’ll be streaming at 10 PM though.)” (Shizuka)

“(You’re streaming today? Looking forward to it~!)” (Hiyori)

Upon receiving Hiyorin’s message about her return time, Shizuka promptly replied.

The name of the chat room was ‘Souma-kai2‘.

Initially, I had chosen a random name, but Shizuka ended up changing it. Just based on the appearance of the name, it looked like the name of some ominous office.

While I gazed at the conversation between my two Oshi, I typed out my reply with a relaxed smile on my face.

“(Alright, let’s start at 8 PM today then. Any requests? If not, I saw an ad for chicken leg meat, so I’m planning to make fried chicken.)” (Souma)

“(Fried chicken sounds amazing! I also like lemon juice!)” (Shizuka)

“(Lemon juice might be a great snack with some alcohol. Fried chicken sounds good to me too.)” (Hiyori)

“(Sure thing. I’ll go get some lemon juice.)” (Souma)

Since I have been entrusted with some money from both of them for food expenses, I want to try my best to fulfill their requests.

With that in mind, today’s menu for the Souma-kai was decided: fried chicken.

“Souma-kun, what’s wrong?” (Mafuyu)

“Hm?” (Souma)

When I looked up after being called, I saw Mafuyu-chan sitting next to me, leaning in to peek at my expression.

Her perfectly sculpted face came unexpectedly close, causing my heart to skip a beat.

“Ah, yeah, there’s a chat room on Rime that was created by some neighbors in my apartment. I was just looking at that.” (Souma)

“And you were looking so engrossed in it… perhaps a girl?” (Mafuyu)

“…..Well, yeah. Sort of.” (Souma)

“…..Hmm.” (Mafuyu)

After that, Mafuyu-chan returned to eating her A-Set Meal.

“What’s that supposed to mean, Souma? Are you fooling around with other girls even though you have someone like Minase-san around?” (Keisuke)

“I’m not fooling around. Also, Mafuyu-chan is like a little sister to me.” (Souma)

“Like a little sister? She’s not actually your sister, right? Weren’t you saying before that you’re all lonely in your apartment?” (Keisuke)

“Yeah, well, two people recently moved in next door. And somehow, I ended up being in charge of making dinner.” (Souma)

“In charge of dinner?” (Keisuke)

“Yeah, they come over to my place for dinner every day. Since neither of them cooks for themselves, well, I guess you could say I’m like their substitute mother? I don’t really understand our relationship.” (Souma)

I’m not entirely sure about Hiyorin’s lifestyle, but judging from the convenience store bags I saw the other day, she didn’t seem to have the healthiest eating habits. She even mentioned alcohol earlier when talking in Rime.

“What’s up with that? It’s practically cohabitation3. Furthermore, with two girls? You sly dog.” (Keisuke)

“It’s not like that at all. We’re just having dinner together. Plus, I just met both of them last week.” (Souma)

“Come on, there’s definitely something going on between you guys. What kind of girls are they? Do you have any photos?” (Keisuke)

Keisuke seemed to become highly intrigued by my neighbor situation, that he stopped eating his curry.

Meanwhile, Mafuyu-chan who seems to be focused on her A Set Meal, was stealing glances in my direction. Despite appearing disinterested, she might be listening to the conversation.

“I don’t have any photos. Besides, there’s no interest from both sides. Both of them don’t seem like the type to date someone like me. They are like the riajuu4 type.” (Souma)

For Hiyorin, you can find plenty of photos of her with a simple online search, and as for Shizuka, if you open MeTube, there are plenty of videos of her 3D model “Ettte-sama”. But of course, I couldn’t say something like that, so I could only answer as I did.

“Hmm… Maybe I should come over to your place for dinner, Souma.” (Keisuke)

“Even if you come, I won’t feed you. Why do I have to make a meal for a man──” (Souma)

“──Then what about me?” (Mafuyu)

“Eh?” (Souma)

I accidentally let out a dumbfounded voice in response to this unexpected request.

“I mean… I would also like to try your cooking, Souma-kun.” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan gazed straight at me with her delicate, glass-like beautiful eyes.

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Wow, it’s already about to happen huh? But there is no way MC will actually invite her right? I mean Hiyori is a literal celebrity, wouldn’t it be problematic if Mafuyu saw her, even if she doesn’t recognize her.

Footnote:

  1. Btw this never happened, or at least in a chapter. She is either lying or it happened off screen. Or I could have just missed it during translation.
  2. Souma-kai means Souma’s group
  3. Cohabitation means living together
  4. I don’t really know how to explain riajuu, so here is a google search result: Someone who is interested in real things and has a successful social life.

ODL – Chapter 10 – Shizuka Regretted This Later

“Well then, Shizuka, don’t mess up your room again. I will be checking it once a week, so keep that in mind.” (Souma)

“Don’t worry, that was just the first time! And don’t you dare, like, fantasize about my underwear or anything like that!” (Shizuka)

“Give me a break. You can say that once you can do your laundry on your own.” (Souma)

Sorry, but it might appear in my dreams tonight. Of course, I couldn’t tell her this.

We were talking to each other at the entrance of the door, but since only Shizuka, Hiyorin, and I live on this floor, we don’t have to worry about being misunderstood if someone overheard us.

“I’ll adjust the timing of dinner to match your streaming schedule. Just let me know what time works for you everyday. Also, let me know if you have any requests for what you want to eat…” (Souma)

“Yeah, got it. …Thank you, serously.” (Shizuka)

“Don’t mention it. Cooking for one or two people doesn’t make much of a difference. Plus, it helps keeps me motivated to cook.” (Souma)

“What are you talking about~?” (Hiyori)

“”!?”” (Shizuka & Souma)

When I turned towards the direction of the voice, I see Hiyorin, who seemed to be returning from work, coming out of the elevator.

“Good evening. Just finished work?” (Hiyori)

“That’s right~ The studio was quite far away this time, you know? So I ended up getting back pretty late.” (Hiyori)

“Ahaha… Sounds tough.” (Souma)

I haven’t had too many opportunities to meet Hiyorin in person this past week, but I couldn’t keep stumbling over my words1 forever (I’m a hard-boiled2 guy after all). For now, I am trying to get accustomed to talking to Hiyorin like a normal person.

In Hiyorin’s hand was a white convenience store bag, containing several tall cans of chuuhai3. The label showed an alcohol content of 9%. It was one of those strong cans preferred by seasoned drinkers.

So Hiyorin drinks alcohol, huh?

“Anyway, weren’t you guys discussing about something fun? Like dinner plans?” (Hiyori)

As Hiyorin spoke, she walked over to us.

The face I always see on during live concerts and the internet is now right here, within touching distance. She really is like a precious gem. Not that Shizuka isn’t cute, but maybe because of personal bias, Hiyorin just seems to shine brighter.

Even if she had a bottle of strong chuuhai in her hand.

“Ahh── Shizuka and I have decided to have dinner together from now on. Since Shizuka just started living alone, and I cook for myself, I thought it might be nice to eat together.” (Souma)

“Heh~” (Hiyori)

Hiyorin slowly let her gaze wander between me and Shizuka, who was frozen in the act of opening the apartment door. Then, using the hand not holding the convenience store bag, she made a peace sign and matched it with both me and Shizuka.

“Are you two dating?” (Hiyori)

“Wha─!? Ow!” (Shizuka)

“We’re not dating. We’ve only just met recently.” (Souma)

Shizuka seemed to have accidentally hit her head on the door, and was now holding her injured area while groaning. What’s she doing?

“Hmm~ I see… Hey, can I join in too?” (Hiyori)

“Eh?” (Souma)

“I mean, I would like to have dinner together too. There are days like today where I need to travel further, not to mention, I have to attend live broadcasting shows sometimes, so it can’t be every day, but…” (Hiyori)

“Ah…” (Souma)

For real?

SeriouslySeriouslySeriously?!

Having dinner with Hiyorin…?

And on top of that, eating the food I make.

This is basically like being a married couple. Looks like full-time househusband Tendou Souma will be born today.

“I’m totally fine with it. How about you, Shizuka?” (Souma)

I direct my question towards Shizuka. I wonder if it was unfair to ask her this. She is still rubbing her head. Did she hit herself pretty hard?

“Ouch… What? Eating together with everyone? I’m totally okay with it… ow.” (Shizuka)

Shizuka raised her upper body, still holding her head and wincing in pain.

“So, that settles it. Is it alright to have dinner at my place from tomorrow onwards?” (Souma)

“Thanks~ Should we exchange contact information?” (Hiyori)

“C-Contact information!?” (Souma)

“Yep, wouldn’t it be better to contact you if I am running late?” (Hiyori)

“Ah, y-yeah, you’re right. Um, so, should we use Rime?” (Souma)(Souma)

“Sounds good. I’ll show my code, so just scan it.” (Hiyori)

Hiyorin slowly tapped on her smartphone, and displayed her friend code. I managed to suppress my trembling hands and scanned it.

[Do you want to add Hasekura Hiyorin as a friend?]

“……Ah.” (Souma)

Seeing Hiyorin’s name on my Rime felt so unreal that I continued to stare at the screen for a while.

…It would be a lie to say that I never fantasized about getting along with my oshi voice actor in real life. Even if it’s just a fleeting4 thought before going to sleep, I do fantasize about it which makes me a little happy. And the one who always appeared in my mind was Hiyorin.

Those fantasies have now become a reality.

If no one was around, I felt like I could strip naked and dance. Even with my so-called “hard-boiled” self.

Fufufu, what’s wrong, Souma-kun?” (Hiyori)

“─Huh!? S-Sorry, I was just lost in thought because I was a bit happy. I will make sure not to cross the line as a fan! I mean, I probably shouldn’t contact you too often, right?” (Souma)

As if I was scolding my overly excited self, I straightened my posture.

…That was close. I was getting too carried away. I almost acted too direct just because I got Hiyorin’s contact information.

It seemed like Hiyori-san didn’t quite understand my words, as she tilted her head and let out a puzzled-sounding voice.

“…Hmm, you know. Souma-kun, you’re my fan, but at the same time, you’re also my neighbor, right? So you don’t need to worry too much about being ‘just a fan’. Let’s get along, okay?” (Hiyori)

“Y-Yeah, o-okay!” (Souma)

────I wonder what kind of face I am making right now, not being able to see it might be the greatest stroke of luck in my life. I probably had a face that I couldn’t show to anyone.

“Umm… Hello, you two…? I’m here too, you know…?” (Shizuka)

I snap back to reality upon hearing the voice that echoes like the rumbling of thunder from hell.

When I turned my gaze, Shizuka was giving me a piercing glare – no, it was beyond just piercing, it was a downright intense. She was glaring at me intensely.

“…Ah, yeah, sorry, Shizuka. So, later, the three of us will create a room on Ruin.” (Souma)

“I’ll leave that to you then~” (Hiyori)

“…… Souma-kun, you’re in for a lecture later.” (Shizuka)

“O-okay… But why though…” (Souma)

With that, we each went back to our own homes.

But still… having dinner with Hiyorin…

I can’t wait for it.

Illustration of their talk

“Umm… Hello, you two…? I’m here too, you know…?”

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Good thing MC went and cleared up the confusion about texting Hiyori as a fan/neighbor. He probably asked out of nervousness but it worked out somehow.

I have no idea why is this chapter called what it is.

Footnote:

  1. Basically, when he is talking to her he keeps going “Uhh-” “Ahh-“.
  2. Hard-boiled means something like being tough, I think.
  3. Chuuhai is an alcoholic drink originating from Japan.
  4. Fleeting means lasting for a very short time, so in this context, its like a passing thought.

ODL – Chapter 9 – Grabbing Her Stomach

“~~~Mmm, it’s delicious~! Wait, did Souma-kun really make this!?” (Shizuka)

“Well, yeah.” (Souma)

By the time I finished teaching Shizuka how to do laundry, and cleaned up her living room which resembled a place of hell, it was already time for dinner.

Even though it was entirely normal for Shizuka to tidy up her room, I was impressed that she went as far as collecting the plastic bottles, removing the labels, cleaning the insides, and turning them upside down to dry. As a result of her diligence, I decided to treat her to dinner.

“So you can actually make Japanese Simmered Fish (Sakana no Nitsuke) at home…” (Shizuka)

“It’s not really difficult, you know? You don’t even need any special cooking equipment. This time, I didn’t even have to fillet1 it, I just cooked the sliced pieces.” (Souma)

“Do you sometimes fillet it yourself?” (Shizuka)

“Only occasionally.” (Souma)

“Wow~ That’s impressive.” (Shizuka)

Shizuka started happily devouring the simmered flounder2 I made, mixing it with white rice. Seeing her enjoy eating the meal I made, makes me happy. That smile alone is enough to… well, I should stop before my thoughts become too creepy.

“Anyway, cooking seems a bit too much for me. I can tell I’m not cut out for it even before trying.” (Shizuka)

“Well, yeah. Maybe it’s best to leave cooking alone for now. Otherwise, you could seriously end up hurting yourself. After seeing your room, I don’t dare to let the current you hold a knife.” (Souma)

As I inserted my chopsticks into the browned flounder, the tender skin split apart, revealing the white-brown flesh beneath. I lifted it to my mouth alongside the white rice and took a bite… Yep, it turned out delicious as usual. I’m glad I didn’t mess up.

As I secretly watched Shizuka happily eat her rice, I found myself lost in thought.

…Today, I went shopping with Shizuka, cleaned up her room, set up her microwave, and had dinner with her. It feels like I have spent my whole day with her.

I never thought I would end up having such a “fulfilling” (although the actual tasks weren’t that romantic) day off like this.

With Hiyorin moving in next door, and reuniting with Mafuyu-chan, it’s like something is about to change in my life.

…Ah, I shouldn’t let my food get cold. It will be hard to eat otherwise.

“….Souma-kun, I have a favor to ask…” (Shizuka)

“Hmm?” (Souma)

When I lifted my head after hearing her slightly hesitant tone, I found Shizuka looking down with a somewhat nervous voice. Come to think of it, her chopstick etiquette is strangely neat despite the mess in her room. That leaves a good impression.

“What’s wrong?” (Souma)

“Well… um…” (Shizuka)

Shizuka lowered her gaze and stared intently at the remaining simmered flounder. Hmm? Is it not enough?

“If you need more, I can share mine with you.” (Souma)

“Unn, that’s not it. It’s not about that… Um, you see… I mean… from now on, I want to eat together with you… Is that okay?” (Shizuka)

“Together? Like we’re doing right now?” (Souma)

“Yeah……” (Shizuka)

“Hmm……” (Souma)

From the way Shizuka was acting, it was clear that her request wasn’t just for casual reasons like my food being tasty or not being able to cook herself. Well, if it’s because she finds my cooking delicious, that’s a reason I would be happy with. But regardless, it felt like she was feeling down about something else.

“Can I ask why you want to do that? I’ll decide my answer based on that.” (Souma)

“Okay… um, you see, I’ve been using Uber Eats for the past week.” (Shizuka)

“Yeah?” (Souma)

With all that garbage lying around, it’s easy to imagine that happening. I have never used Uber Eats myself, but I wonder how expensive it is.

“The food is normally delicious and all, so there wasn’t really a problem… but…” (Shizuka)

“…but?” (Souma)

Shizuka lifted her gaze to look straight at me. Then, with a wistful smile, she said.

“Having homemade food after a long time made me remember my mom’s cooking. Ahaha… I guess that’s a bit childish. I got a little lonely.” (Shizuka)

“…I see.” (Souma)

I understood.

So, Shizuka was feeling homesick after living alone for the first time. Well, it’s a pretty common feeling shared by people in the same situation.

Well, after a week, the initial excitement from living on your own will start to settle, and feelings of missing your family can arise. Maybe even more so for a girl.

This is… hmm, really hard to turn down.

It’s not like I dislike Shizuka, and in fact, I quite like her a lot (as a neighbor).

If I can help alleviate her loneliness, then as a friend, I would be happy to.

…Besides, I realized it’s unexpectedly satisfying to hear someone tell me my food is delicious.

Well, that settles it.

“Oh, of course, I don’t mean to force you into it—” (Shizuka)

“—It’s fine.” (Souma)

“Huh?” (Shizuka)

Maybe she thought I would refuse, so she let out a surprised voice.

“I will make the meals for you too, Shizuka. So let’s eat together. I have classes in the morning and afternoon so they are out, but if that’s okay with you—” (Souma)

“—Really!? Thank you so much!” (Shizuka)

Seeing Shizuka’s smiling face as she responded already made me realize that “accepting was the right choice”.

However, little did I know that this dinner arrangement would eventually bring the hidden struggles of another neighbor to light.

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Mmm~ Their relationship seems to be going well. I can’t wait to see Mafuyu meet them lol.

Shorter chapter than usual but I am in the middle of my final school assignments so I at least have enough time for this one. I might not be able to post for a while until my assignments are over. Idk cause translating if my way of relieving stress.

Footnote:

  1. Fillet is a boneless cut or slice of meat or fish. I am no cooking expert so I could be wrong.
  2. Flounder is a kind of fish.

ODL – Chapter 8 – First-class Garbage Collector’s House, Rinjou Shizuka

“Seriously…?” (Souma)

I opened the door leading to the living room and was left speechless by what I was seeing in front of me.

The floor was filled with trash.

Trash, trash, trash, trash, trash, it’s everywhere. On top of that, the clothes were left hanging out in the open.

Uniqlo plain sweatshirt. Half-finished cup of ramen. Leftover convenience store café au lait. Cardboard boxes from online shopping sites. The underwear I caught a glimpse of before scattered around. A pile of snack wrappers. A flock of empty plastic bottles. A towering pile of energy drink cans that look unhealthy. Yellow and white wrapping paper from a certain hamburger restaurant near our location.

We live in a pretty luxurious apartment. The living room of our apartment is so spacious that the extra space is wasted for only one person to live in. However, this living room has now become so cluttered that it’s difficult to even make out the pattern on the floor.

“You…” (Souma)

I turned around and called out to Shizuka, who was standing motionless by the entrance looking lost. No, I couldn’t quite figure out what to say. Shizuka was avoiding eye contact, lips pressed together slightly, and looking upwards with a hint of embarrassment.

“I told you to not be too shocked…” (Shizuka)

“Well, even if you warned me beforehand… this is just too much.” (Souma)

I took a step into the living room, trying to get a grasp of the situation.

*Clang

I accidentally kicked something away.

…It was a container of an Ultra Spicy Peyoung.

“This… from a week ago… ugh!?” (Souma)

The moment I realized it, a strong, pungent odor assaulted my nose. The living room that had been pristine just a week ago had already transformed into a sea of decay.

“No, this is bad. This is way too much.” (Souma)

I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I closed the living room door and sought refuge at the entrance.

“Clean up after eating.”

“Put your laundry in the basket.”

“Don’t leave trash on the floor.”

Such common sense rules kept coming to mind, but in front of me was the appearance of a beautiful girl with the mess of an adult and the life skills of a baby. I didn’t know where to start, and all I could do was gaze at Shizuka in silence.

“…”

…Shizuka and Ette-sama are not the same.

The admiration and respect I held for Ette-sama, was crumbling audibly.

In any case, something needs to be done about this For now, I pushed Shizuka into my house.

I placed Shizuka’s groceries, which I was helping her carry, on the living room table and had Shizuka sit in an unoccupied chair. It was the second chair that I seldom used.

“…It’s quite clean here, isn’t it?” (Shizuka)

Perhaps feeling embarrassed about being seen in such a messy, or rather hoarded, state, Shizuka mumbled with her head lowered.

“No, this is normal. It’s your place that’s abnormal.” (Souma)

“Ugh…” (Shizuka)

“Shizuka, was it like this back at your parents’ house too?” (Souma)

“No… my mom took care of everything… even cleaning of the rooms…” (Shizuka)

“………I see.” (Souma)

In other words, the generous support of her caring mother led to the creation of this adult monster. I can see why Shizuka’s mother was worried about her living alone. Although. she probably didn’t expect her daughter to be this helpless.

“Ugh, you must be disappointed… after seeing something like that.” (Shizuka)

“……….” (Souma)

Shizuka looked up at me with upturned eyes.

Seeing those childlike eyes… I found myself unable to push Shizuka away.

Certainly, I was disappointed, and my feelings toward Ette-sama had somewhat dispersed. However, within those emotions also exists a small light of “Well, if that’s the case, then it can’t be helped”.

“…I was disappointed. But well, that’s also because I had created my own fantasy about you. I knew nothing about you and yet I labeled you as someone with a high level of ‘girliness’.” (Souma)

“……….?”  (Shizuka)

Shizuka looked at me as if not understanding what I was saying.

“I assumed that since you look cute, you must also have a high level of ‘girliness’. But well, that’s just my own biased reasoning.” (Souma)

“Wha-…!?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka’s expression suddenly brightened, a complete change from just a moment ago. What’s with her? Does she really understand the situation?

“Anyway, we’re in this together now. I’ll make sure you can live on your own.” (Souma)

“Souma-kun…!” (Shizuka)

“But before that… let’s clean up your room first. We can talk more afterwards.” (Souma)

I’m glad Shizuka moved in next to me, and I’m glad that we become friends. Someone needs to help Shizuka become a proper human being, or else she’ll end up as a garbage collector. In any case, it’s good to start early.

“Hey! That’s my underwear! Souma-kun ecchi1!” (Shizuka)

“Shut it. These are just bacteria-ridden panties. You can tell me that once you do laundry by yourself.” (Souma)

I picked up the scattered clothes  and threw them into an empty laundry basket sitting beside the washing machine.

Even with both of my hands full, I couldn’t get all of them, so I had to go back. After three rounds of back-and-forth, I successfully gathered a week’s worth of clothes.

Blue, blue, pink, pink, purple, orange. I won’t say what I am looking at.

“Shizuka, how many pairs of underwear do you have?” (Souma)

“Wha-why do I have to tell Souma-kun about that?!” (Shizuka)

“Well… I was just wondering what you were going to do once you run out I doubt you were planning to pick up and wear it again, right?” (Souma)

“I-I would never do something like that! What do you think I am!?” (Shizuka)

“For now, I think of you as a local garbage collector.” (Souma)

“Ugh…” (Shizuka)

While saying that, I loaded about twice the size of the laundry basket into the washing machine. Shizuka’s washing machine was a state-of-the-art drum type, making the loading and unloading process quite convenient.

“…I was thinking of buying new ones for now… and maybe if I felt like it, I would try washing them… but I don’t even know how…” (Shizuka)

“You were thinking of buying new ones? Seriously? Come here, let me show you. Laundry is easy. This one’s the latest model.” (Souma)

“Y-Yeah…” (Shizuka)

*Pitter-patter

I heard Shizuka’s footsteps as she lined up beside me.

“First, you put the detergent in here. The amount should match this thick line. Then, when that’s done, turn this knob to this position────” (Souma)

As I explained to Shizuka, a question arose in my mind. It was about the pink underwear peeking out from the washing machine.

“…Souma-kun?” (Shizuka)

“Sorry, just give me a second.” (Souma)

I pulled out the underwear from the pile of clothes and checked the tag inside.

“Wha-what are you looking at so intently! Hentai! Hentai!” (Shizuka)

“Ow, stop hitting me. It’s not what you think. I’m looking at the tag!” (Souma)

Checking the tag, it seemed that the underwear could be washed in the machine. There were some stylish patterns on it, so I was worried it might be hand wash only.

Mouu! Let go of it! Put it back!” (Shizuka)

I casually put the underwear back into the washing machine, while Shizuka was waving her fists around at me.

“Hah… hah… you finally let go…” (Shizuka)

Shizuka was breathing heavily. Her face was red. If she didn’t want to be seen that much, she shouldn’t leave it lying on the floor.

“Shizuka, do you have a laundry net?” (Souma)

“…Laundry net?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka who was glaring at me with a piercing look, tilted her head in response to my words.

“Yeah. I think it’s probably better to put underwear in a laundry net. If you don’t have one, I can bring one from my place.” (Souma)

“I probably don’t have one… but what’s a laundry bag?” (Shizuka)

“Got it. I’ll go bring one. In the meantime, fish out your underwear. Both the bra and panties.” (Souma)

“O-Okay.” (Shizuka)

I fetched a large laundry net from my home and returned to find Shizuka holding a pile of colorful underwear in her hands.

Even with all this used underwear worn by the beautiful girl right in front of me, I can’t believe I’m not getting excited at all.

I worked with Shizuka, who was making sure not to let me touch her underwear, to place them into the laundry net and close the lid of the washing machine.

“Well, now all you have to do is press this button. It will take care of everything including the drying. Go ahead, give it a press.” (Souma)

“Got it… Eh, is it really that simple?” (Shizuka)

“If it didn’t have a drying function, you would have to hang them up yourself. But this one has it. Well, there is also the downside that cleaning the drum can be a bit of a hassle.” (Souma)

“It’s… surprisingly easy.” (Shizuka)

Shizuka was staring intently at the washing machine without even blinking.

As I observed her profile, I couldn’t help but wonder if this would bring her a bit closer to being a proper human being, if she was even getting closer.

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

MC is in full house-husband mode, ain’t got time to worry about ecchi stuff. Well, this is about what I expected from all the foreshadowing. But, leaving half-eaten food alone for who knows how long is pretty bad lol.

Btw this chapter is actually called “First-class Hoarder House Architect – Rinjou Shizuka”. Hoarder house is a Japan term for when houses which are not intended to be garbage disposal sites are filled with garbage or something like that. I didn’t quite understand it and it sounded weird so I changed the title to what it is now.

Footnote:

  1. Ecchi/Hentai = pervert. I won’t put footnote for this anymore in the future, I mean pretty much everyone knows this.

ODL – Chapter 7 – Home Appliances Are Amazing These Days [Shizuka PoV]

[Shizuka’s PoV]

“……Why am I like this, mouuu.” (Shizuka)

My heart feels flustered and restless.

Currently, my world is separated by a single wall. Leaning against the entrance of the door, I unintentionally let out a sweet voice.

I know the reason why my heart feels so flustered.

Well, it’s not like I have completely confirmed it yet… but it seems like I have already reached the point of deciding whether to acknowledge it or not.

“I’ve become all deredere1…” (Shizuka)

The one thing firmly burned into my mind is… Souma-kun’s relaxed expression.

I don’t know about his Oshi voice actor or whatever, but what about me? Our conversation got cut short earlier, but now I feel like an idiot for being the only one hung up about it.

…I was happy when he told me I was his “Oshi”.

“………Ah.” (Shizuka)

Though I told myself I would put this thought on hold, it seems like my heart already understood my feelings.

“Hahhh~ I’m really easy, aren’t I?” (Shizuka)

After all, all he did was just help me with the unpacking.

Even middle schoolers would be amazed at how easy I am. Am I like the heroine of a romantic comedy who falls in love just because someone picked up an eraser or something?

“………” (Shizuka)

It’s only been two days since we met, so would it be too weird to say I like him?

Am I rushing things?

However, with the appearance of a formidable rival, my maiden alarm is flashing bright red. If I space out, Souma-kun might stop looking towards me. I don’t want that.

“……Fuuu” (Shizuka)

No wait, calm down, me.

I still haven’t confirmed if I like him yet.

Or have I?

Just thinking about Souma-kun makes my heart race.

And every time I receive his reply from Rime, I feel like cheeks loosened up.

Ahh, just knowing that Souma-kun lives next door makes me want to jump with excitement!

But I still haven’t confirmed that I like him.

That’s right. Yep, that’s how it is.

It’s not like I have been told that people in the city are cold but unexpectedly, I was treated kindly, and it tickled my maiden heart.2

……*yoshi, yoshi*3 Calm down, it’s okay. The fluttering in my chest is starting to settle down. My face is still warm, but the pleasant haze that was clouding my mind seems to be clearing. What happened to me? I was acting a bit strange, huh?

“………?” (Shizuka)

*Ponnn*

I received a notification on Rime.

As a VTuber, I have many acquaintances who are more than friends but less than close friends, so my phone is quite noisy. But, for the past two days, I have been messaging Souma-kun so much that I thought Rime = Souma-kun.

For some reason, I suppressed my jumping heart and looked at the message.

“(I’m sorry about earlier! I got a bit too excited, but I want you to know that Ette-sama is also my Oshi!)” (Souma)

“……Hau” (Shizuka)

AHHHHHHH———Mouu!

I am not happy about receiving this message!

My heart is not fluttering at this!

I haven’t forgotten how you pushed me aside earlier. Don’t think that just because you send me a Rime message that it will fix my mood. There needs to be a punishment, yep. I was planning to buy some household appliances anyway. We can legally go out together. It’s a punishment. It’s not like I want to do this.

“(I was really hurt. As punishment, you must accompany me for shopping)” (Shizuka)

After pressing the send button, I impatiently waited for the reply.

Soon enough, a reply arrives.

“………Ehe” (Shizuka)

…What should I do? Just hearing the sound of the Rime message makes me happy.

You better take responsibility for this, seriously.

[Souma PoV]
[1 week after they met; on the shopping day]

“So, what are we going to buy?” (Souma)

“Hmm, I think a must-have item is a microwave. I didn’t realize it when I was at my parents’ house, but it’s essential, isn’t it?” (Shizuka)

“Well, yeah. I’m actually surprised you managed to live without a microwave for a whole week.” (Souma)

As I opened the door, I was greeted with a Shizuka in a healthy outfit of a shoulder-revealing, see-through summer knit top paired with jeans. Her not-so-large chest was emphasized by the slightly tight-fitting knit, which made me feel like it was an unhealthy situation I couldn’t ignore. It would be too much of a struggle for daily life if I started lusting after my neighbor.

For male college students, meeting up with a girl on a holiday would be a situation to drool over, but for us, there was no special feeling about it. That’s because the place we opened the door to was our designated meeting spot. Whether it’s fortunate or unfortunate to have a beautiful girl living next door, it’s undoubtedly fortunate. There’s no need to think twice about it.

Even so, when you casually invited me, I thought we were just going to buy some small items. I never expected it to be home appliances. I was willing to help carry the stuff, but I think a microwave might require delivery, so I might be excused from that duty.

“Hey.” (Souma)

“Hmm?” (Shizuka)

“I’m not really knowledgeable about home appliances and stuff. I don’t think I’ll be of much help even if I go with you.” (Souma)

Although, I am looking forward to going out with Shizuka.

That being said, just tagging along without any specific role assigned makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Being a bag carrier or having a designated task makes me feel more at ease. Without that, this feels like a date or something. I will try my best not to be conscious of that kind of thing.

“……Mou~” (Shizuka)

Upon hearing my words, Shizuka puffs up her cheeks and glares at me with squinted eyes.

“What’s the matter? Do you dislike going out with me, Souma-kun?” (Shizuka)

“Well, no… it’s not like that…” (Souma)

It really isn’t like that. The evidence is that I put on some hair wax which I don’t normally use when i go university. If I were to go all excited like, “Yay, I’m looking forward to it!”, it feels like a virgin response. Well, I am a virgin, but still…

“By the way, this is a punishment, okay? Souma-kun, just follow me silently. Got it?” (Shizuka)

“Got it. Understood.” (Souma)

“Alright, then let’s go!” (Shizuka)

With Shizuka energetically leading the way, I followed her, occasionally pressing my tongue against the back of my cheek.

“I don’t know which one to buy! There are so many options!” (Shizuka)

Shizuka is holding her head in both hands while at the microwave corner of the electronics store.

I have heard of the expression “holding one’s head,” but this might be the first time I have actually witnessed it in real life. In the one week that I have known Shizuka, I found out that her straightforward body language is one of her distinctive traits. It’s quite different from the elegant impression she gives as Ette-sama.

“Well, Shizuka, what kind of features do you want in your microwave?” (Souma)

Nowadays, home appliances have evolved so much that microwaves do more than just heating things up.

They can bake bread, steam fish, warm up food evenly using sensors, suggest recipes with artificial intelligence, and other functions. The high-end ones can apparently cook meat using just steam. It’s quite impressive how far they’ve come.

When I was living alone, which was about two years ago, microwaves were already like that. So, they might have evolved even more. In any case, you should carefully consider and choose your home appliances. Never decide based on looks alone. This onii-san4 can guarantee that.

“Features? Isn’t a microwave just for heating up food?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka turned her face towards me, looking surprised.

“No, it’s not just that. To be honest, we can even say that the times have come where you can cook everything with just a microwave.” (Souma)

“I see. Well, for me, as long as it can heat up food, it’s fine.” (Shizuka)

With that, Shizuka turned back to the microwaves.

It was evident that Shizuka didn’t pay much attention to home appliances. As she slowly walked past various microwaves, her gaze wandered around constantly, showing that she wasn’t thoroughly checking their performance.

“Hmm, I guess this one will do.” (Shizuka)

“Which one?” (Souma)

“This one. This tiny one.” (Shizuka)

When I caught up with Shizuka, who had somehow made her way to the corner of the microwave section, she was pointing at a small, single-function microwave that looked like something a disinterested college freshman would buy. It was priced at only 6,000 yen. It was June, so it was probably leftover stock from some kind of new student support set or something.

“Shizuka, this one can only heat up food. There’s no wattage adjustment either.” (Souma)

“It’s okay. I don’t need more functions. I might just end up not using them and waste them since I have no intention of cooking.” (Shizuka)

“Huh? You don’t cook?” (Souma)

Saying this might be a stereotype, but I had thought that Shizuka was good at cooking. She gives off a modern and stylish vibe, and I had an impression that she might create visually appealing dishes and post them on social media.

“Well, not that I don’t want to… but I can’t cook. You know, I lived with my family until now.” (Shizuka)

“Even if you lived with your family, many people can still cook. I cooked even when I was living with my family.” (Souma)

“Really?! Wait… Souma-kun, can you cook?” (Shizuka)

“Well, I can manage just like an average person. I cook for myself every day..” (Souma)

“………” (Shizuka)

The conversation abruptly fell into an awkward silence, and as I looked at Shizuka with suspicion, she was staring at me with slightly flushed eyes.

“…What’s wrong?” (Souma)

“Uh?! Sorry, it’s nothing, it’s nothing!” (Shizuka)

Shizuka turned her face back to the microwaves, her cheeks reddened.

“Anyway, I’m going with this microwave. Wait here for a moment, I’ll buy it.”

Saying that, Shizuka went off to look for a store clerk.

What was that?

“…So, you know, my mom keeps nagging me. She says if I’m living alone, I should learn all the household chores.” (Shizuka)

“That’s a pretty normal opinion.” (Souma)

“But you see, in Tokyo, there’s Uber Eats, and even before that, there are convenience stores and supermarkets with prepared foods, right? I don’t think it’s necessary to be able to cook.” (Shizuka)

“Household chores aren’t just about cooking, you know.” (Souma)

The evening sky began to tint with red.

Both of us were on our way back, each carrying shopping bags in our hands.

…In the end, we hopped from one miscellaneous goods store to another, and Shizuka bought a plethora of items. I can understand that feeling of getting too excited and buying too much for your first solo living experience. But I also know that most of those things would probably be covered in dust within three days.

“Shizuka, are you doing your laundry properly? It’s dangerous to let it pile up during this time of year.” (Souma)

“Ugh…” (Shizuka)

In response to my casual question, Shizuka makes a groaning gesture while holding her chest.

Wait… Does that mean she hasn’t been doing it?

“You’re not telling me you haven’t done it a single time since moving in, right?” (Souma)

“Ahaha, ahahahaha…” (Shizuka)

Shizuka looked up at the sky, distracting her from reality. The sky had turned a beautiful crimson color. It’s an unusual but pleasant sky during the rainy season.

“Shizuka, this isn’t a laughing matter. Can you imagine how much bacteria would be breeding in your underwear from a week ago? Just thinking about it… Urgh.” (Souma)

I couldn’t help but shudder at the thought of countless bacteria multiplying and covering the clothes.

“Hey! Don’t imagine a maiden’s underwear! You pervert (Ecchi, Hentai)!” (Shizuka)

“Maiden’s underwear won’t be covered in bacteria. But seriously, I might actually come over to your place today.” (Souma)

“What?! Why!?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka clearly showed her rejection to my suggestion. Her straightforward emotional expression was one of Shizuka’s characteristics.

“Either way, you can’t set up the microwave by yourself, right? They said it will be delivered in the evening. I will go check if there’s anything else problematic while I’m there.” (Souma)

“Nononono, why do I have to have you check my place, Souma-kun?” (Shizuka)

“I don’t want a biohazard outbreak coming from next door. I mean, imagine if there’s a foul smell.” (Souma)

“That’s harsh?! It’s not that bad!” (Shizuka)

“The bacteria are going rogue in your laundry basket, you know.” (Souma)

While we were having this conversation, we arrived at our apartment complex—a quite luxurious one, to be precise.

Ignoring Shizuka’s attempts to prevent me from entering, I elegantly stepped into the elevator, and eventually, she reluctantly followed suit. We arrived at Shizuka’s apartment door, and as I stared at her, she nervously told me not to be shocked and slowly opened the door.

…… “Don’t be shocked”? What on earth is going on?

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Wow~ I didn’t expect this girl to be that easy. And apparently she is also a tsundere?

Alright, I’m ready to look at this “room” of hers.

P.S. I thought that this was Hiyorin’s PoV until she mentioned she was a VTuber LOL. Shaddap this chapter was super hard to translate 🙁

ODL – Chapter 6 – My Real Life Oshi Moved In Next Door

One day, specifically the day after meeting Shizuka and reuniting with Mafuyu-chan, an incident occurred.

“What’s going on? Did someone move in?” (Souma)

It was still bright outside even at 6:00 PM during this rainy season.

After returning from university, I spotted a well-known moving company’s truck parked in the parking lot of my apartment building. Several men wearing work uniforms with the company’s label were diligently carrying boxes and furniture.

As I entered the apartment building, I glanced at the hardworking adults and pressed the elevator call button.

As I gazed at the lift floor light indicator, a well-built guy carrying a cardboard box stood beside me. The elevator arrived, and the doors opened. Since both of the guy’s hands were occupied, I took the initiative and stood in front of the control panel.

“What floor?” (Souma)

He answered with a familiar floor number – the same floor I lived on. Seriously? Shizuka just moved in, and now we are already getting another new resident?

I hope they are a nice person. If possible, it would be great if it is an attractive woman.

While thinking about such things, the elevator reached our destination floor. The guy next to me gave a nod of thanks and strode confidently to the vacant apartment, which happened to be right across from mine.

──── Our apartment building is structured with four units per floor, two on one side of the central corridor and two on the opposite side. Shizuka and I live on one side, and it seems that someone new moved into one of the two units opposite from ours. Now, only the unit opposite of Shizuka’s room is left. Until recently, I was the only one living here, but what happened all of a sudden? It’s not even the moving season.

“………” (Souma)

It would be a lie to say that I’m not curious about the new neighbor’s personality, but I can’t just go and see their face. Suppressing my restlessness, I opened the door to my apartment and sent a message to Shizuka.

“(It looks like someone is moving in across from us.)” (Souma)

“(Really!?)”  (Shizuka)

I quickly received a response from Shizuka. Even though it had only been two days since we met, we had become messaging buddies. We managed to have casual conversations without any particular topic, and surprisingly, it was quite enjoyable.

“(I hope he’s a good-looking guy)” (Shizuka)

“(No, I’m sure it’s a beautiful girl.)” (Souma)

“(What beautiful girl lol)” (Shizuka)

“(A beautiful girl means a beautiful girl.)” (Souma)

“(If it’s a beautiful girl, I already fill that role.)” (Shizuka)

“(Beautiful girl (age 20).)” (Souma)

“(Shut up.)” (Shizuka)

The conversation continued effortlessly. We were both messaging each other without overthinking the conversation.

Although, it’s true that if it’s really a beautiful girl, it might clash with Shizuka’s position (as a beautiful girl). I won’t mention it to her, though.

“(I will pretend to pass by and look inside.)” (Shizuka)

“(You’re acting suspicious!)” (Souma)

Unlike me, Shizuka was more proactive.  Without responding to my advice, the conversation paused for about five minutes.

…Could it be that she actually went for it?

How on earth is she going to pretend to pass by? If she has a reason to accidentally enter a room while they are in the middle of moving, I really want to know. Well, she would probably just end up being a nuisance.

As I head towards the entrance to check the situation, I received a message.

“(She was incredibly beautiful!!!)” (Shizuka)

“(Really?)” (Souma)

I could feel my cheeks loosening upon hearing Shizuka’s report. Oh man, seriously? Did my spring finally arrive?

“(Seriously?)” (Souma)

“(Dead serious. She had a sparkling aura around her.)” (Shizuka)

“(That’s too much.)” (Souma)

Having both Shizuka and Mafuyu-chan in my life already feels like accomplishing an unachievable dream, but now it seems like god is pushing the boundaries even further. God, how much do I have to pay for this?

“….Eh?” (Souma)

I froze. Frozen like a frog being stared at by a snake. No, there is a better way to describe it, especially for this very moment.

…I was frozen like an otaku being approached by their Oshi.

“Eh, um, eh…?” (Souma)

The sudden event caused my thoughts to completely short-circuit. My brain was rejecting the sudden influx of dopamine caused by my Oshi in front of me.

Yasumi Hiyori.

The woman who had moved in, described by Shizuka as “having a sparkling aura” introduced herself with that name at my doorstep. However, I knew her by another name. There was no mistaking it. Her face had the same jewel-like features.

“Um… Are you… Yasumi Hiyori-san… The voice actress?” (Souma)

I managed to utter those words with great difficulty, and she broke into a bright smile.

“Oh, you know about me?” (Hiyori)

“Y-Yes, um… I’m, uh, well… Yasumi Hiyori’s my oshi… I have been to all of Zanimas’1 live concerts, and I watch Drecure too.” (Souma)

Oh no.

This is bad.

I feel like my heart is about to jump out of my chest.

The impact of meeting Ette-sama, Shizuka, and now Hiyorin within such a short period of time was incomparable. It’s like nothing I have ever experienced before!

How can I not feel this way?

I would always desperately wave my glow stick, hoping to catch her attention. And when her gaze met mine, I felt a rush of joy. Not to mention she would sometimes even wave back. Moments like these are what I would cherish for a lifetime.

The overwhelming barrier between performer and fan.

To be the chosen one among tens of thousands of nameless extras gazing at Yasumi Hiyori from afar. She is right in front of me, actually listening to what I have to say.

I used to be one of the tens of thousands of nameless mobs gazing at Yasumi Hiyori from a distance. And now, she’s right in front of me, actually talking to me.

I mean, she’s just too cute.

What is this? Is her face really made of jewel-like beauty or something?

Of course, she also shines brilliantly during her live performances, but even now, that doesn’t matter. I cannot put this into proper words, but it’s dangerously overwhelming. Having your Oshi right in front of you like this. I can’t stay calm.

“Yeah, that’s right. I’m so happy. Thank you for always supporting me!” (Hiyori)

Yasumi Hiyori, aka Hiyorin, tilted her head and smiled.

“…Ah.” (Souma)

With that, I completely lost it. My brain couldn’t take it anymore.

“…Hmm?” (Hiyori)

As I stood there like a motionless scarecrow with smoke coming out of my head, the neighboring door opened. Just like a turtle reaching for food, Shizuka peeked her face out and looked over here.

“Oh, the person from earlier.” (Shizuka)

I didn’t know what kind of coincidence she had feigned, but Hiyorin gave a slight bow to Shizuka. Shizuka greeted her with a “Hello” as she fully stepped out of the entrance and walked over.

“I’m Hasekura Hiyori. Nice to meet you (Yoroshikune gaishimasu).” (Hiyori)

“I’m Rinjou Shizuka. Nice to meet you too… well, actually, I just moved in the day before yesterday.” (Shizuka)

“Oh, really?” (Hiyori)

“Yes, that’s right. Souma-kun has been living here for quite a while though.” (Shizuka)

“………Ah?” (Souma)

When I heard my name, I was brought back to my senses. That was close; I almost lost consciousness there.

“Come to think of it, I haven’t asked for your name yet. Should I call you Souma-kun?” (Hiyori)

“Eh, ah, yes. I’m Tendou Souma.” (Souma)

“Tendou Souma-kun, huh? Nice to meet you (Yoroshiku ne)!” (Hiyori)

“Ah, urh, y-yes!” (Souma)

“…Why are you using casual language2?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka was giving us a stern look, shooting her ‘humidity-increasing beam’ our way.

“Well, um, I’m a voice actress, and it seems like Souma-kun is my fan. So, I got a little too relaxed and used casual language.” (Hiyori)

“Eh, a voice actress!?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka’s reaction was like something you would see in a manga from a decade ago, with her mouth wide open in surprise.

Well, it’s understandable. If a voice actress suddenly moved in, it would be surprising.

“Um, can I ask for your alias?” (Shizuka)

“I work under Yasumi Hiyori… but do you happen to know me?” (Hiyori)

“Um… hmmm…? I feel like I have heard of you… maybe?” (Shizuka)

Unlike me, it seemed like Shizuka wasn’t familiar with voice actresses. She didn’t seem to recognize Hiyori.

“Haha, I guess I’m not that famous yet.” (Hiyori)

“No, that’s not true! Hiyorin-san is also in Drecure this season, right? It’s just that Shizuka is a bit ignorant!” (Souma)

“I wonder.” (Hiyori)

I couldn’t bear seeing Hiyorin giving a sad smile and hastily jumped into the conversation. Shizuka, who was cast aside, pouted discontentedly.

“Souma-kun, you’re really taking Hiyori-san’s side, huh? I thought I was also your Oshi.” (Shizuka)

“W-Well, even if you say that, having your oshi voice actress right in front of you has a different impact, you know?” (Souma)

“What’s so different about it?” (Shizuka)

As we argued back and forth, Hiyori watched us with a puzzled expression.

“Oshi…? Shizuka-san, are you doing something too?” (Hiyori)

Upon Hiyorin’s innocent question, we stopped arguing and looked at each other for a moment. There was nothing I could do. I shot Shizuka with the ‘it’s your fault beam’ using my eyes.

Shizuka tried to bridge the awkward silence by uttering “Ah” and “Um,” but eventually, she seemed to give in and spoke up.

“I’m a VTuber. My character name is Henrietta…” (Shizuka)

“No way?! Ette-sama!?” (Hiyori)

Now, Hiyorin also let out a surprised voice. She leaned forward like a high school girl admiring a mannequin dressed head to toe in branded clothes and turned her body towards Shizuka.

“I watch Ette-sama’s streams a lot! So, was the Peyoung stream two days ago a celebration for moving in here?” (Hiyori)

“Uh, um… yes, that’s right…?” (Shizuka)

Shizuka probably didn’t expect that a genuine voice actress would be her fan. She looked taken aback and surprised.

“Oh, what should I do? What a coincidence. Um, if you’re okay with it, let’s get along from now on.” (Hiyori)

“Yes, of course! Nice to meet you and please take care of me from now on.” (Shizuka)

With a gentle grip, Shizuka shook Hiyori’s offered hand.

I wish I could shake hands too…

“Ah, Souma-kun, please take care of me from now on too. By the way, it’s nice to see that my neighbors seem like good people.” (Hiyori)

No hand was offered to me…

It seemed that Hiyorin had a more straightforward and lively way of speaking during live MCs or online shows, but off-camera, she had a more relaxed way of talking.

With that, my real-life Oshi moved in next door.

Illustration of Hiyori moving in

“Oh, you know about me?”

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

OH SHIT I messed up Hiyori’s name. Her real name is Hasekura Hiyori but her alias (Voice acting) name is Yasumi Hiyori. I will go change it later.

Imagine the likeliness of a female fan moving in next door to a female VTuber. That has like basically zero odds of happening unless it was planned.

Rip MC no handshake was offered. Although I’m pretty sure she would let you if you asked.

Footnote:

  1. I honestly don’t know what this is. Edit: Future me talking, this is actually an idol raising game, like bang dream but instead of bands, it’s idols.
  2. When greeting Shizuka, Hiyorin used Yoroshikune gaishimasu which is more formal than she greeted MC using Yoroshiku ne

ODL – Chapter 5 – Her Name is Minase Mafuyu

“────!?” (Mafuyu)

In response to my words, the long black-haired girl turned around forcefully. She stared at me for a while… until it suddenly hit me. Her face similar to that of a delicate ice sculpture, froze in surprise.

“W-Wait, Mafuyu, is it maybe this person!?” (Pink-beige-haired girl)

The pink-beige girl is talking to the black-haired girl in an excited manner, but the latter doesn’t respond. Instead, she utters a nostalgic name.

“Souma… onii-chan1…?” (Mafuyu)

“……Ah.” (Souma)

The moment I heard that name, memories that had been forgotten rushed into my mind like a storm.

“Mafuyu-chan…?” (Souma)

Mafuyu-chan was a girl who lives nearby and was close to me when I was in elementary school.

Originally, our parents were good friends. Because of that, I was often taken to their house during tea parties, where I ended up becoming friends with Mafuyu-chan.

At first, Mafuyu-chan was shy and would hide behind her mother, so it was difficult to have a proper conversation with her. But as I continued coming over, she gradually started playing with me.

Mafuyu’s mother was worried that she was spending too much time indoors, so she asked me to teach her how to play outside, and I did.

Around that time, she started calling me “onii-chan” and I grew fond of Mafuyu-chan, who would happily follow me around like a little sister.

However, one day, she suddenly disappeared.

Later, I found out from my parents that she had moved away due to her parent’s job transfer.

Afterwards, I entered middle school and was desperately trying to fit in with my peers, so I forgot about Mafuyu-chan quite quickly. It’s a cruel thing to say, but that’s how it happened.

But now that I think about it, Mafuyu-chan’s last name was indeed────

“────Minase Mafuyu-chan. So that’s why the name sounded familiar. Long time no see, how have you been?” (Souma)

In response to my call, Mafuyu-chan widened her beautiful eyes. Her lips moved slowly, but she didn’t make a sound. To an outsider, it seemed as though she was overwhelmed.

“Wait, really? Your first love, for real? Oh my gosh, this is incredible! Mafuyu, come on, go talk to him! I’ll disappear!” (Pink-beige-haired girl)

The pink-beige girl pushed Mafuyu-chan forward, urging her towards me.

“Well then, I’ll leave her to you! Bye!” (Pink-beige-haired girl)

With that, the pink-beige girl quickly moved to the front seats. Now, only Mafuyu-chan and I were left behind.

“…I’m sorry. Please give me some time to calm down.” (Mafuyu)

“Sure, take your time.” (Souma)

I sat next to the beautiful girl as I listened to the lecture of the professor who was deeply involved in the development of a certain mobile phone system.

““…””

Due to being seated at the back, I could easily see the behavior of the not-so-many students attending the lecture.

Judging from the fidgety glances and hushed whispers of the boys, it was evident that they were all aware of our presence. It must have been because of Mafuyu-chan.

In conclusion… I was attending the lecture with the beautiful girl who was currently the talk of the university.

““…””

A comfortable silence lay between us. I couldn’t help but think, “Who would have thought that I would be attending a lecture side by side with Mafuyu-chan?”

That same small, crybaby Mafuyu-chan had grown up into a dignified adult woman, with a strong “cool beauty” aura. She even got nicknamed the “Shootdown King of the Engineering Department”. Time really flies by quickly.

“…’Onii-chan’ is a bit embarrassing in public. Can I call you Souma-kun instead?” (Mafuyu)

“Sure. I’ll continue to call you Mafuyu-chan. Or rather, it’s fine to use a casual tone like we used to.” (Souma)

I noticed something peculiar in the way Mafuyu-chan phrased her words.

It sounds like she is implying that she would call me “Onii-chan” if we were not in public. Well, It could be just a slip of the tongue or a play on words.

It’s hard to imagine the calm and composed Mafuyu-chan calling someone “Onii-chan” with a sweet voice.

“Well… Souma-kun. I never thought we would be studying at the same university.” (Mafuyu)

“Me neither. I mean, I’m really surprised too. In my memories, you know, you were still so small.” (Souma)

“Yeah… about that. I can’t quite grasp the distance between us now.” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan glanced at me out of the corner of her eye, and I could tell since I was doing the same.

I understand Mafuyu-chan’s feelings.

Indeed, those 10 years of adolescence2 changed us into the university student we are now. we have both grown and developed our own values and friendships. Although we used to get along like siblings, behaving as if we were still family based solely on our past friendship would create a considerable sense of awkwardness. Even if we both wanted to maintain that kind of relationship, it can’t be avoided.

“Well… I guess we have both grown in our own ways. Regardless, I’m happy about this reunion. I have always wondered if you were doing well.” (Souma)

In truth, I had stopped thinking about Mafuyu-chan around the time I entered middle school, but there was no need to mention that. I have grown into an adult, and adults are creatures that tell white lies3 when necessary.

“You cared about me all this time… You know, I never forgot about you, Souma-kun.” (Mafuyu)

Application layer, network layer, and transport layer… As I was copying them into my notes, I felt a piercing gaze on my cheek. It wasn’t just any gaze; it was a strangely intense and heated one.

“Souma-kun, you heard what I said earlier, right?” (Mafuyu)

“…Yeah, well…” (Souma)

The conversation from earlier.

Confession. First love. Tendou Souma.

I couldn’t possibly forget it. It was almost like a love confession. I never thought it would be directed at me.

“What I said before… it’s true. Now that we have reunited, I have to say this… I… I could never forget about you, Soumu-kun. So… um…” (Mafuyu)

The session layer, data link layer… I consciously moved my hands. Otherwise, I felt like I might lose control due to nervousness.

“If you don’t have a girlfriend or anything, I, um… sometimes think… I would like you to… take care of me like you used to.” (Mafuyu)

She must have been really embarrassed. I think I blushed too, but Mafuyu-chan seemed even more so.

“…” (Souma)

“If you don’t have a girlfriend.” Mafuyu-chan said that.

If it’s a matter of having one or not, then of course, I don’t have one. However, there are people I’m interested in.

Ette-sama and Yasumi Hiyori.

They are my so-called “oshi”.

…Wait, hold on. Let me explain.

I’m not the kind of otaku who has romantic feelings for my Oshis.

Sure, when I see Yasumi Hiyori during a live performance, I might think things like “Her legs are amazing” or “Her face is like a gem”, but it’s not quite romantic feelings. Besides, even if I wanted to get to know her, there is the whole issue of how to meet in the first place. I admit I have had some fantasies about this, but I know they are just fantasies and nothing more. Of course, if I could date her, I would want to. But that’s just wishful thinking.

But as for Ette-same, by some miracle, I met her in real life. Her contact information is right there on my phone. This goes beyond the realm of typical otaku fantasies. Of course, there is no way she actually likes me in that way, but we have at least built a relatively friendly relationship. To be honest, there might be a chance.

So, putting Yasumi Hiyori aside, when it comes to Ette-sama, I’m currently in the process of “deciding what to do”.

“………” (Mafuyu)

Mafuyu-chan looked at me with a worried expression. While I sometimes think that Yasumi Hiyori has a “face like a gem”, Mafuyu-chan’s face was truly like a gem. Her facial features were so immaculate4 that she could easily be recognized as a national treasure-level artwork.

And yet, she’s expressing her desire to be close to me.

How can anyone decline such a request from someone like her?

“In that case, I would be happy if you still see me as an older brother like before. Look forward to being with you, Mafuyu-chan.” (Souma)

Upon hearing my words, Mafuyu-chan’s face lit up with a smile.

She had changed quite a bit, but her smile remained just like it was in the past.

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Well, MC is not wrong that he definitely has a chance with Shizuka. At least he noticed it.

I actually thought that it was a confession of love from Mafuyu but then I guess she didn’t really say that she still liked him during the conversation.

ODL – Chapter 4 – Shootdown King of the Engineering Department

[Rinjou Shizuka PoV]

“(I watched the stream, your character was totally collapsing LOL)” (?)

I stared at the message from Zeria-chan with a resentful look.

“(It was unbelievably painful! Tell me properly next time!)” (Shizuka)

Zeria-chan is a VTuber from the same VTuber agency as me, [Virtual Real].

Since we debuted around the same time, we became quite close friends, and we stay in touch even in our private lives.

Before I did the challenge, I asked my Super Spicy Peyoung challenge senpai, Zeria-chan, “How spicy is it?”. However, the answer I received was, “Hmm, not really that spicy. It’s quite ordinary.”

Based on that response, I ended up streaming the Super Spicy Peyound challenge even though it wasn’t something I was good at.

As you can see, the result was disastrous. In other words, it’s all Zeria-chan’s fault.

“(I mean, if I had told the truth, there’s no way you would have eaten it lol)” (Zeria)

“(Of course! What even was that? Was that human food?)” (Shizuka)

“(I know right! The next day, I had such a bad stomachache lol)” (Zeria)

So, Zeria-chan is a little devil VTuber who is the subordinate of the princess of the demon realm, “Mamimume Memo”, another VTuber from our agency. CP1 is often set up between them, and fan-arts of them are often created.

Zeria-chan usually plays the role of the “troubled subordinate of Memo-san”, where she is tasked with outrageous requests from Memo-san, making it a recurring theme in their content.

In other words, for her, the Ultra Super Spicy Peyoung challenge is not the worst thing she has experienced.

It seems that there is a content called “Zeria Torture” where people enjoy seeing Zeria-chan go through tough situations, but surprisingly, she herself seems to find it “delicious”.

As for myself, being a refined princess-like character, I feel like I have lost something important because of the Peyoung challenge.

“(Oh, by the way, you moved, right?)” (Zeria)

“(Yeah, that’s right! Starting today, I’m living on my own!)” (Shizuka)

“(Is it in Tokyo?)” (Zeria)

“(That’s right! Once I settle in, let’s hang out in real life!)” (Shizuka)

Zeria-chan said she lives in Tokyo, so now we will be able to meet easily. I’m excited about meeting someone in real life whom I have only known online until now.

“(I’ll drop by your place someday. Living alone can be quite challenging, but hang in there!)” (Zeria)

“(Thanks! The neighbor is really nice, so I think I’ll manage somehow.)” (Shizuka)

I sent a peace sign emoji.

“(You greeted the neighbor? In Tokyo, not many people do that.)” (Zeria)

“(Yeah, but they helped me with unpacking.)” (Shizuka)

“(…………??? You let a stranger you just met into your house to help with unpacking??)” (Zeria)

“(Yeah, but… was that a bad idea? I couldn’t finish unpacking alone.)” (Shizuka)

“(That person is a women right???)” (Zeria)

“(…………)” (Shizuka)

“(…………Seriously? Are you okay?)” (Zeria)

“(I made sure to separate boxes with underwear and stuff! And besides, they are really nice person, so I think it’s fine. Well, I couldn’t move certain things like my computer alone.)” (Shizuka)

Thinking of Souma-kun effortlessly lifting the heavy computer made my heart flutter.

“(Well, I guess there’s not much you can do about it… Anyways, be careful, okay? Living alone as a woman comes with lots of risks, and we also have the risk of our identities being revealed.)” (Zeria)

“(I will be careful. Thanks, Zeria-chan.)” (Shizuka)

I have already been exposed! But there is no way I can say that!

And so, my eventful first day of moving came to an end.

……

……

……Souma-kun.

Nanchatte2.

[Souma PoV]

“What are you looking at, Souma?” (?)

“A VTuber.” (Souma)

“Oh, it’s Ette-sama again. You really like her huh?” (?)

The one sitting next to me with a tray of curry was Keisuke, a fellow student from the same department. I can’t exactly remember what his family name. We usually have meals together at the university cafeteria on weekdays.

The university cafeteria is spacious, and although there are many people, seats are often empty. That’s why we always wait for each other at the usual seat. There are no strict arrangements, and if one of us doesn’t show up, the other just eats alone. It’s a relaxed relationship, but I didn’t mind the atmosphere.

“Alright, let’s eat.” (Souma)

I put away my smartphone, which I was using to watch MeTube, and picked up my chopsticks to take a bite of the steaming ramen.

Keisuke, who was scooping up his curry with a spoon, started talking.

“Do you know? The Shootdown King of the Engineering Department recently rejected the top player from the Tennis Club. That same victim is the one who won the Mister Contest last year.” (Keisuke)

“The Shootdown King of the Engineering Department? What was that again?” (Souma)

“Are you an idiot? It’s the super beautiful girl that our university is proud of!” (Keisuke)

“Don’t face this way and yell at me, gross.” (Souma)

The Shootdown King of the Engineering Department…?

Even after searching my memory, I have no recollection of hearing rumors about such a person.

“Was there really someone like that?” (Souma)

“Haven’t you heard of Minase Mafuyu, a first-year engineering student? Since April, all the cool guys at our university have been obsessed with talking about her.” (Keisuke)

“Minase Mafuyu…?” (Souma)

Minase Mafuyu…Minase Mafuyu…Minase Mafuyu… The face doesn’t come to mind, but the name does sound oddly familiar.

“Oh, I think I might have heard of her before.” (Souma)

“I knew you would probably know. She is said to be a sure winner for this year’s beauty pageant, but it looks like she’s not interested in it at all. Not to mention, no matter who she talks to, she always felt distant.” (Keisuke)

“Well, that’s understandable. If you’re bombarded with attention right after entering university, it might make you wary.” (Souma)

While slurping on my ramen, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Minase Mafuyu, a woman I knew nothing about.

Coming to study diligently at a university, yet constantly approached by unknown guys and even being expected to join the beauty pageant, it’s no wonder she’s fed up. Just as guys who don’t attract attention have their own worries, popular ones also have their fair share of troubles.

Although I’m not completely disinterested in a kouhai3, who seems to have captured the hearts of everyone in the university, I certainly don’t stand a chance if even the top player in Tennis Club got shot down. I promptly deleted the name Minase Mafuyu from my brain’s memory. After all, I have Ette-sama in my life now. Ette-sama, who lives next door, is way more significant than some unknown beauty pageant winner. That’s just common sense, right?

“I wish I were born two years later, sigh.” (Keisuke)

“You idiot, you wouldn’t stand a chance either. Well, I’m off.” (Souma)

“Alright, good luck!” (Keisuke)

While Keisuke is stuffing his mouth full of curry and daydreaming about a rosy university life with a beautiful girl, I left my seat and headed off. Unlike him, I still have a class in the fourth period.

I took the elective course “Information Media Studies”, it is not required but I was curious about it. I decided to eventually take it because I wanted some extra credits, but it turned out to be quite interesting.

What I particularly liked about it was that the content of the class was directly applicable to daily life.

You see, for subjects like mathematics, it’s easy to think, “When will I ever use integrals in real life?” However, in Information Media Studies, there’s no such dilemma. The class covers topics like internet security, how the websites we frequently use are created, and even how to make CG (computer graphics). It delves into fields that are noticeable to us in some way if we have smartphones or computers.

Sure, you can light a stove without knowing how it works, but understanding its mechanism can help you avoid many dangers. In today’s society, I believe that becoming knowledgeable about internet-related matters can be more beneficial than anything else. That’s why I was looking forward to this class quite a bit.

The lecture room was by no means large, and the students were sparsely seated. Many of them were kouhais. Diligent students who willingly took extra lectures were not common at this university, it seemed.

I quietly sat down at the corner of the back row, trying not to stand out. I was about to put on my earphones, but I stopped myself. The lecture was about to start soon.

“Mafuyu, did you really get confessed to again?” (?)

“…………Yes. Of course, I turned them down.” (Mafuyu)

“When will they ever learn? Even though Mafuyu already has someone in her heart“ (?)

“It’s not like that, though.” (Mafuyu)

The seats in the lecture room were arranged like in a movie theater or the tea fields of Shizuoka Prefecture4. From my position in the last row, I could see the entire lecture room.

A little ahead of me, I could see two female students chatting.

One of them had pink-beige bob-cut hair and is talking cheerfully, while the other had long black hair and responded in a calm way. It was an interesting combination.

Feeling a bit bored, I decided to pass the time by eavesdropping on their conversation without much thought.

“Eh, but you said before! You can’t be with anyone because you can’t forget your first love!” (Pink-beige-haired girl)

“It’s not as dramatic as that. It’s just that, somehow, that person is still in my heart. We haven’t seen each other since we moved due to my parents’ transfer, maybe because it happened when we were still little, I couldn’t even experience a proper heartbreak. I just can’t find myself interested in being in a relationship with anyone right now.” (Mafuyu)

The two of them seemed to be talking about love.

From behind, I couldn’t see their faces, but the girl with black hair seems to be quite popular.

However, she can’t forget her first love, and that makes it difficult for her to be in a relationship with anyone. It’s a heart-wrenching story.

“Mafuyu, you have some surprisingly romantic tendencies, you know? If it were me, I would have forgotten about someone I haven’t been in contact with for 10 years.” (Pink-beige-haired girl)

“…………It’s not like I will go out of my way to meet that person again. But I just want to cherish these feelings a little longer.” (Mafuyu)

I was on the verge of shedding tears due to the earnest feelings hidden behind the cool demeanor of the girl with long black hair.

What a wonderful person she is. How can it be okay for such a pure maiden’s feelings to not be fulfilled?

Her crush should just come and see her right now.

Seriously.

*Gugugu*… You’re making me cry… Oh, but you know what? Nowadays, if you search their name on Instagram or Facebook, wouldn’t they show up? Have you tried searching?” (Pink-beige-haired girl)

“I’m not really familiar with that kind of stuff, so I haven’t tried it… Does that mean their profile comes up just from their name?” (Mafuyu)

“Well, I’m not sure, but if it’s someone from our generation, there’s a good chance they have an account. Why don’t you tell me their name, and I can try searching for you?” (Pink-beige-haired girl)

As expected of an Information Media Studies student.

Indeed, using social media, you might be able to find information about someone you only know by name.

Whether it’s a good or bad thing in terms of privacy, I’m not sure, but at least it’s helping this maiden’s first love was starting to move. So it must be a good thing.

Good job, Instagram.

Good job, Facebook.

The girl with long black hair hesitated, shaking her head a few times, before finally mustering the courage to meet the gaze of the pink-beige-haired girl.

“Um… Tendou Souma(天童蒼馬). Ten(天) for Heaven, Dou(童) for Child, and the difficult one, Sou(蒼) for Blue and Ma(馬) for horse.” (Mafuyu)

……………

“…………Eh? Me?” (Souma)

TL notes:

Thanks for reading!

Ah yes, Meta, the company who blatantly demands all of your data.

I am not good with spicy stuff either, but I will definitely not eat anything that starts with “super spicy”. But maybe Shizuka did it FoR ThE CoNTeNt.

There is a good chance I might have messed up the princess VTuber’s name. It’s like really confusing so idk: “魔魅夢まみむメモ”.

Also Vol 2 illustration just got released:

Footnote:

  1. CP means coupling/character pairing like shipping I guess. No, it’s not the other CP you are thinking of.
  2. Nanchatte means just kidding or something like that. I don’t exactly know what this meant so to not make it weird, I put in the original text instead.
  3. Kouhai is an underclassman, Senpai is upperclassman but you probably already know the latter.
  4. A place in Japan where “Mt. Fuji” is located and also boasts the largest production of Japanese green tea.
